You've Got Such Eyes

You've got such eyes
That look like they have two pupils in each,
Like the latest cars have.

At night
Cars fly from highway to highway, whirring
With two pairs of headlights.

You've got double eyes,
Enough for two faces.
All the oceans shine through the eyes
Multiplied by two.

You see, your eyes are
A map of the two hemispheres of the Earth.
When you close them,
The equator sinks into the night.

And when I ask them to open,
They reveal two blue poles
At the moment of opening.

Tenderness

Versions:
The Earth is empty now without you.
How would I live a few hours without you?
In the gardens, leaves are falling the same way,
And taxis are rushing somewhere as before.
But being alone on the Earth causes a feeling of emptiness,
Meanwhile you're flying, and the stars
Give you their tenderness.

The Earth was just as empty
When Exupery was flying,
In the gardens, leaves were falling the same way,
And the Earth didn't know how to be without him
While he was flying
He was flying, and all the stars
Were giving him their tenderness.

The Earth is empty now without you.
Come back, as soon as you can.

Tenderness

Versions: #5
The earth is empty without you.
How can I live through these next few hours?
Just like the leaves falling in gardens,
taxis all hurry off to somewhere.
It's just empty on earth alone without you.
And you, you fly on and the stars will offer you their tenderness.

That's how empty it was on earth,
Also when Saint-Exupéry flew off.
Just as now, the leaves falling in gardens,
And the earth could fathom a way
To survive without her, while he was flying,
flying. And all the stars gave him
their tenderness.

The earth was empty without you,
If you can, fly off soon.

In the dugout

Logs burn bright in my cramped little stove
On the wood, flowing tar, like a tear
The accordion sings to me here,
In my dugout, of your eyes and smile

Beyond Moscow, in fields full of snow,
On each bush the leaves whispered of you,
And I want now for you to hear
All this longing in my living voice

You are now far away, far away,
And between us lies snow beyond snow
To reach you is not easy to do,
To reach death – only four little steps

Sing, accordion, to spite the wind
Call the happiness that’s lost its way
In my bitter cold dugout, I’m warm
From a love that will never burn low
